John Waugh discusses the life and works of Hank Williams, his contemporaries, and musical descendants. I’m a big fan of The Judds’ early work, and I’m proud to have “Why Not Me” in my LP collection. Maher talks about how he fashioned that sound, and about Potter’s guitar work, toward the end of this articleby Peter Cooper on Mix magazine’s Web site. Songwriter credit goes to Harlan Howard, Sonny Throckmorton and producer Brent Maher, who created that unique Judds sound centered on the driving acoustic guitar of Don Potter.

It was the title track of their first full-length album, which Steve Huey of All Music Guide praised as a million-selling “classic of modern country, establishing the Judds as spokeswomen for a new generation of female country music fans.” (Read Huey’s biography of The Judds here.) “Why Not Me” was The Judds’ third single, and the second of eight straight to top the Billboard country charts. 21: Released 25 years ago today, this Grammy-winning song was tailor-made for Wynonna Judd’s powerful, distinctive voice, mother Naomi’s fetching harmony and an innovative sound that declared, “ain’t it time that you notice these girls next door?” Millions of listeners did just that.
